Danke

Hello from Germany! I'm taking a quick moment to let you know that should you ever visit Germany, be prepared to eat sausage 24/7. Or be prepared to lose a little weight not doing so as I have :) We're headed back to France tomorrow so no more sausages!

I'll be posting more about my trip when I return with some pictures. It's been fun and I've been having a good time. Wish you were here!

Quickies!

Few things before I head out.

1. I hope my Storm doesn't do a total collapse while I'm gone. Aye! Not sure what is going on in Seatown, but something is amiss. I have a few theories involving Betty Lennox and Adia Barnes but it doesn't fully explain what's going on. I also wonder about team chemistry these days..it's weird and nothing like last year. Losing 3 players must really fuck with shit.

2. I mowed the grass last night at 8pm. I thought it would be cooler. It wasn't. The humidity was so high that I felt like I was mowing in the rain. And my damn tomatoes have some fungus so who knows if they'll be alive when I return. I did notice that I've got some baby watermelons grown, they're very cute. Should have cucs by the time I return too.

3. I have an Audible subscription for my PDA and I have two books and like 7 magazine/radio programs downloaded for the trip. The books are light ("Lion, Witch, and Wardrobe" and "The Secret Life of Bees" -- read the first long ago, but was feeling nostalgic. The second one sounded good). I'll prob run out of battery early on in the trip and have no way to charge. Oh well.

4. My talk is 90% finished. I just need to put in some bells/whistles animation-wise and a few things here and there. However, I feel like I have a million other things to do before I leave town. Naturally.

5. Kenneling the dogs while we're gone (the Agent will be gone the same two weeks as I)..the last time we kenneled them (it's a nice place, no worries), they were so tired they fell asleep the entire way home. I wonder if the other dogs bark all night or something and they get no sleep. My little baby sleeps like a rock as it is, but even she has her limits. Plus she snores and twitches at night.

6. I got a hair cut and eyebrow wax the other day. Hair shorter and easier, it was getting long. As for the eyebrows, good lord, if I had known how easy it is to get them waxed, I would have never tweezed. I'm a convert.

7. I have had a headache/neckache since Monday. Enough of that bullshit, I say.

8. French wine and German beer.

9. "je suis un Canadienne"

10. au revoir, ma petites!

Hi!

Guess what!? I'm leaving for Europe on Saturday! And I'm still not done with the talk I need to give at this conference! And here I am writing an entry on my blog! A-Doy!

Anyway, I'm gearing up for my trip which is part business, part pleasure. I'm flying in to Paris and will take the train down south a couple of hours to my French friend's place. This is the same gal who two years ago when she was visiting decided to try to feed a snapping turtle a piece of grass while we all were on a camping trip. Apparently, turtles are novelties over there or something. Despite our protestations (and perhaps because of the good American beer she had been drinking), she forged ahead. And now, there is a small piece of French finger somewhere inside an American snapping turtle. Lesson learned.

From there, we are driving over to Germany, near Frankfort. The conference is the rest of that week (and luckily, my talk is on the first day on the first session, which means I get to coast the rest of the conf w/o worrying about my talk). Then back to France and I take the train up to my cousin's country place, near Normandy. There it shall be small quaint French villages, lots of food, wine, relaxing. I'm quite excited about it despite the fact that I don't know a lick of French or German. (Thanks Senora Baker for 4 years of Spanish!)

I have been practicing saying "je suis un Canadienne" just like V taught me..I think that will come in handy so I won't get snatched off the streets or taunted. I am also practicing my disaffected and bored European look and packing lots of black. Can a Midwestern girl next door blend in to Old Europe? Stay tuned in two weeks!

Ok, I need to get back to PowerPoint. Lordy, remember the old days when people gave talks with like..individual transparent overheads and actually wrote on them? Remember the mimeograph? Remember the Alamo?

ps. While in Paris, I'm thinking about recreating Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes' romantic proposal on top of the Eiffel Tower. I just need a doe-eyed innocent to play Katie to my Tom. Call me! It'll be soooo romantic!

ps. Respect ME

And don't think I won't be out this weekend picking up the new Missy Elliot cd, uh huh!

Power Forward

Oh it's Friday..been a busy week. I hope you'll indulge me while I post a few pix of a certain power forward from down under who will fuck your shit up. Inspired by an..interesting dream I had this morning. What can I say, basketball players work for me. Sue me!

Manual Labor

I have spent the last 5 days working on building a privacy fence with my neighbor. Granted, it hasn't been 24/7, but you try augering twenty 3ft deep holes through Kansas clay and limestone and an hour will feel like a day. I shall be posting some pictures of said fence soon. It's not quite completed (the yard is, afterall, 160ft long), but it's getting there. Naturally, I like to pick the hottest, most humid weather in which to exert the maximum amt of physical effort possible. Good times!

To be honest though, the thing I like most about the whole hammer and a nail business is that it keeps the mind pleasantly occupied on the project itself. No day dreaming or mental gymnastics to engage in, just good old fashioned manual labor. There were times in grad school when I seriously considered quitting and simply working on a farm somewhere in Nebraska. Hell, there are times now when I consider same. Always working in your head disconnects you with the here and now, with the natural world. Digging in the dirt now and then is a Good Thing (tm M Diddy.
