Random Sampling and Abnormal Distributions

Holla, all you data geeks!

Oh Win, you had to go and do it. This whole tagging business. I'm resisting...resisting...

...but I can only write about the damn Metro for so long before even I click my own hollaback button. So. No guarantees re: scintillating details, these are just the random facts, Ma'am.

Rules:
We have to post these rules before we give you the facts.
Players start with eight random facts/habits about themselves.
People who are tagged need to write their own blog about their eight things and post these rules.
At the end of your blog, you need to choose eight people to get tagged and list their names.
Don't forget to leave them a comment telling them they're tagged, and to read your blog.

1. I had my one and only nosebleed for the first time ever in my life three nights ago and got all light-headed based on the quantity and vivid color. Lohan might be used to such things given her, um, happy pants , but this is all new to me and I would like to pass on having another such event.

2. One time, when I was like 9 or 10, I played on this softball team and we were in the championship game. I was a scrawny skinny little thing, but I was fast and had a good arm. I was playing the spot they called 'rover' which is kinda behind second base and sorta outfieldy. They stuck all the little kids in the outfield b/c they figured no one would ever hit that far. I have no actual memory of this, but my dad recently told me a story about that game where apparently, there were two outs and we were winning (glued to the screen by this riveting random fact yet?) by like 1 or something. The other team was up to bat and one of their best hitters was up. A big girl, I guess. So she ends up hitting this line drive that's totally going to go over my head and win the game. According to the story, I apparently threw my skinny little arm up, caught the ball, and fell down with it still in my mitt. Now here is where you would think I would remember something of this magnitude: My teammates all ran to me and lifted me on their shoulders and carried me off the field in joyous celebration. Like total fucking movie or something. Seriously. And I can't remember this?

3. I stole a car once when I was 15. Granted, it was my mom's and I only drove it around the block while she was bowling and she never knew it was missing. Speaking of bowling, I recently just threw away like 5 old bowling trophies of mine from when I was a kid. Yeah, I bowled. Remember, we're talking Indiana.

4. I wrote my entire PhD in a month just to prove my advisor wrong, that I actually could write it in a month. Sidebar I: I had the data already collected, but still. Sidebar II: I gave up drinking beer, smoking pot, and sleeping during that month. Sidebar III: I thanked my dog in the acknowledgements. Sidebar IV: If I can do it, you can too, Mrs V!

5. Four years ago, while back home visiting my mom, I witnessed and was the first on the scene of a head-on car accident on a perfectly sunny summer morning. My mom was in the car with me and we were traveling on a two lane country highway. The minivan in front of us was weaving back and forth across the lanes, almost hitting cars coming at us. I slowed way down and was just reaching for my cell phone to call the cops when the accident happened. The car he hit spun around and landed in our lane, his minivan flipped and went into the other lane. I pulled over and ran up to the car, the smell of burning oil was kind of sweet. I hate that smell now. The older lady in the car was in shock. I reached in and touched her shoulder, talked to her. She kept asking what happened and fading in and out of shock. There was blood, not a lot, but enough. She had also lost most of the fingernails off of her hand and blood was coming from her ear. I know now that it visually could have been a lot worse and am thankful it wasn’t. I just kept talking to her and telling her help was coming; my mom found her watch in the roadway and put it in her car. They had to cut off the top of the car and the doors to get her out. It wasn’t until a couple of hours later that I realized I had her blood on my pants. The driver of the minivan was an older man too, we never knew why he drove head-on and hit that car and we never found out whether the older woman lived. I won’t forget that day. It makes me wonder about the guy who witnessed my mom’s accident a year later and came up on the scene first. I know his name from the police report. What did he see and what does he remember most? Actually, I’m kind of glad I don’t know the story he tells about that night.

6. The longest I've ever gone in my life without having a dog is 1 year. Growing up, our dog Alex used to walk with me to school and lay out in front of the doors until it was over and walk me home. He would do the same when I walked downtown to the grocery store. Everyone knew him in town and he used to lay in the street in front of our house and watch the cars go by, everyone just drove around him. My yellow dog in grad school had the softest ears and when we went camping, she would search for the highest place near us so she could guard. She loved to canoe too. One of my current black dogs, the baby dog, reminds me alot of her, very gentle and sweet. I can't imagine not having a dog.

7. I have fallen all dorky-crazy in love with a lone wolf Canadian drummer girl!

8. In the tradition of costumes, my old friend J and I once dressed up as Isis. Remember that show? Eight years later in the trunk of my old car under my spare tire, I found the 80's gold belt from that costume. It's now back in style I think, I saw someone wearing one on the Metro today. Niiiice.

Alas, I don't have 8 people to tag, but Mona and vivvy, please indulge me and keep this chain letter going and you will have good luck for 8 years. Or something. It's way gay, just do it!

4000

Ahh, indulging in my favorite Aussie*

LJ hits 4000, holla!

*who, you know, said hey to me in that accent** of hers at the Mystics game...jealous?

**speaking of sexy accents, along with Australian and Irish, I gotta say on record that I love the whole Canadian thing, eh?

7/23/2007

Dress me like a clown*

Man, I'm bloggy these days. More to love, yeah? Or feel indifferent about. Whatever floats your boat. I'm going to be busy the next couple of nights and you'll be busy too, all wrapped up in your own stuff and we'll fall out of touch and soon enough the emails and phone calls will taper off and maybe we'll see each other once or twice over the years but let's face it, we lead busy lives but that doesn't mean we love each other any less, right? We'll always have Joplin, won't we? I miss you already... *sigh*

Hello, tangent! Anyway:

1. The DC Metro has paradoxically made me both more and less of a lesbian. I now value comfortable shoes so much so that sadly I notice footwear more than decolletage. And lord knows I love the ladies.

2. Tomorrow, I will be attending the Storm game against the Mystics. For the one WNBA fan out there (holla, 360!), you know I'm gonna get some pix of Birdy and LJ (aka OTP). Oh yeah!

I had one other thing to tell you but it's been lost in all this hubbub. Feel free to make up something salacious and/or prurient and/or hoosier-like that I'd probably share here. And with that, I tip my hat up to the great white north and bid you all a good day.

ETA (2 hours later): I remembered. Remind me to turn off the ice machine at work. I just got rid of the old funky ice and am making new sparkly ice for myself. Yeah, I'm treating myself like a queen these days. Splurging. Decadence unfettered in Arlington, VA. Bling Bling and whatnot. I just don't want a repeat of the Great Ice Debacle of '07, ok? Ok.

(Man, I kinda wish what I forgot had instead been salacious or even slightly titillating, I can almost hear the click of the <--Back button from here).

*which is totally a kickass song from that new mix of sparks that I'm digging on and you should too.

Funnel cake is the new Elephant Ear

So today since the weather was so nice and it was time to get out of the house, we went up to Baltimore for Artscape. It was quite lovely an great people watching. But you know those things always have the venders with the gyros and the italian sausage and the fried stuff. I still smell like onion and pepper just from walking by these places. What was a bonus though was beer and wine was sold liberally and could be carried about the street with abandoned. I don't know why that thrilled me, but it did. I apparently am easily impressed. Or not. Anyway.

Now, the funnel cake. Any outdoor festivally type thing you go to these days have that heart attack waiting to happen covered in powdered sugar. In case you haven't had one, it's like a beignet, but bigger and not as good. Funnel cakes are all well and good, but I will bring out the curmudgeon and ask what the heck happened to the good old elephant ear? That's what we had growing up and frankly, I find the funnel cake to be inferior. I find the funnel cake to be a poor substitute. I find the funnel cake to be woeful and lacking. Furthermore, I fart in the funnel cake's general direction. And that is all I have to say about that. Goodday!

That's the way with everything

That's all we do, isn't it - look at things and try new drinks?

ETA: My friend sparks made up another iMix for me and I'm very excited, I need some new music to get me through that damn commute. Check it out here for yourself.

And you know, *hint hint*, if anyone else who happens to stop by my humble blog wants to make up a little iMix and share it with me, I encourage such things. You would get a total Midwestern high-five shoutout holla!

Ya'll Come Back Now, Ya'ear?

Miss me? Having trouble getting through the day without me? Alas, I have returned from the great state of Kentucky with nary a scratch on my body or a bite mark to speak of. I'm kind of disappointed in myself, I have to say.

So I spent this week meeting and consulting and speaking in acronym. Long long days and the evenings spent in my own personal hottub jacuzzi. It was rough. I wish I could say more about Lexington, but what I saw was lovely and the food was tasty. I even returned with Bourbon Balls (which can be painful if left untreated, I hear).

Oh, and in a room full of 18 people, there were four of us hoosiers, someone from Michigan, someone from Ohio, and someone from Illinois. We spent a sidebar at dinner talking about places to eat in Chicago (where our next meeting/consulting/acronyming will occur). Shouldn't be too surprised with the Midwest Represent given that we were very close to it, yeah? I took an informal vote on a euchre tourney for the next mtg, I will make it happen, trust me. (high-five otter!).

I wish I had a couple of funny stories to tell, but there's nothing all that humorous about social service contracts. Hey, did you hear the one about our budget getting cut? Sorry, that's the material I have to work with, I'll stick with the Metro.

Speaking of which, I just might not have a bitch this week. I have to go in tomorrow of course, but my time out in the country has softened me right up. I might actually like people again. Pipe dreams, I know, but I say dream big, little soldier, dream big...

All-Stars

Holla! Yeah, so today I am going to the nationally televised at 330pm (EDT) WNBA All-Star game being held in this very city. Look for me, I'll be the one in the tshirt with now-gay hair. Oh wait, that would be all of us. I'll be bitching about my new haircut in another post I'm sure, so I'll spare you. Let me just say that Roxanne would be aghast. I have been told it doesn't look that bad, but I have my doubts. Full report and pictures when I return.

ETA: Ok, partial report: Game was awesome, had great seats, LJ rules. The end!

ps. I have some vids but no time to upload right now. Will come back and update. Because I know you can't wait. Don't lie.

pps. AND yet another Midwest Represent moment, the lady sitting next to us at California Burrito lives in Kansas City and she overheard us talking about it and gave us a high-five. We are everywhere.

ppss. I'm traveling tomorrow for work and will be in the lovely state of Kentucky for almost a week. Jealous?

Riding on the Metro*

Just for you, a chance to experience your own real-life Metro commute with me. Yeah, how gay is that? Very I say. So follow me as I navigate but one tiny segment of my commute at rush hour on this lovely July day. I mention in the video worrying about you getting "car sick" because you know, walking with the camera is totally like riding in a car. Oh screw it, you try to be all on your toes on Friday. I'm so tired, I don't even care that I probably sound like a total dork. Just tell me you love me no matter what and we'll call it a day, yeah?

Enjoy your commute:

* Hello, if you don't love this Berlin song, I don't even know you anymore.

Captain HF

So did I mention that my sexy hair consultant from back home emailed me recently to tell me that she was sure that my hair looked like shit and that was my punishment for leaving her. Sad thing is, she's right! Gah, I have total hairfuck these days. It's long and stupid and with the humidity here in this godforsaken city, I just need to shave it all off and start again. Think that'd go over ok in CorporateWorld? Luckily, I have a haircut this Sat, unluckily, it is not with sexy hair consultant. Wish me luck.

I just got a drunk text from A and J and they are taunting me with all their talk of drinking and such. This is why I hate them and am glad I moved far far away. Why they think I would care to drink beer with them and hang out is beyond me. Frankly, they all just need to stop bawlbabying at me and crying over my not being there.

Oh, and it has been hot/hell here lately and yet...and yet, I have now seen a woman who commutes somewhere along my route wearing a full cape over her clothes. Like a Ren Faire cape tied around her neck, all billowy and whatnot. This over a long flowy dress and elf shoes (making total assumption about the shoes, but probably not too far off). Hey, I say, wear what you want, I don't judge, but seriously, a cape? In this weather? I can barely stand to wear a bra and panties (oohh, google search perverts, do you find me sexy?), let alone clothes over them. Then again, you know, I'm just not a "cape" person. My superpowers are more steathy/undercover and I don't like to call attention to my specialness. That's just me.

I have nothing more to say that has not been said before. So goodday to you!

Praire Town

Yeah, it's another music post, but this song has been killing me non-stop for like 3 days. I'm really glad I didn't hear this 6 months ago, I would have fallen apart. The Wailin' Jennys. You can hear this and other songs on their website here.

When it rains it snows in this prairie town
There's a good three inches on the ground
It seems I'll be losing any peace I've found

I see your face all over this town
But I know you're nowhere to be found
You're far away, you're safe and sound

Far from this prairie town
Far from this prairie town

So leaving seems the thing to do
When I'm here I'm lost in thoughts of you
And in my dreams I'm city bound

But if you ask me to come to you
To leave these fields and these skies of blue
You know I'd be leaving my sacred ground

Leaving this prairie town
Leaving this prairie town

No one's love comes close to yours
Nothing's what it was before
My eyes are heavy and my heart is sore

Leaving this prairie town
Leaving this prairie town

When it rains it snows in this prairie town
And we just watch it fall to the ground
And wait for love to come around

So ask me in that way you do
And I'll leave these fields and I'll come to you
And watch my heart as it breaks in two

I'm leaving this prairie town
I'm leaving this prairie town

DMSR

So, you know how I work in a Bette Porter building with all kinds of suits and such, right? It’s this completely different world. I’m not on a nice, rolling, grassy tree-filled campus with fresh-faced college kids playing Frisbee anymore. I’m in a 20ish story building, all curves and glass. No one cracks a smile, and from the conversations I catch in the elevators, everyone is doing Something Very Important (which, unless it’s saving the world, is rarely accurate).

There are restaurants in this building and a CVS and coffee shops and who knows what the hell else. Yes, that’s handy, I admit. I have this security card that gets me into our suite of offices yet the door to my own office has no lock. Not that I keep anything of import there, except for a perfect slice of blue geode that keeps me grounded. No one wants to steal my TPS reports.

And hey, this big office has a bank of three windows, one of them even opens so I can get fresh air. Granted, the view isn't all that great, but at least I can see the weather outside (downside: right under the flight path of National airport). There are some perks associated with being a senior somethingorother. Of course, what I actually do is a bit nebulous. Conference calls and reading reports and "documents" written in acronym. I am learning to speak in nonsense. It is very important to evaluate the efficacy of implementing this ACRONYM in an efficient and effective manner while linking incentives back to ACRONYM's goals. Yeah. That's all there in the TPS report in case you didn't get the memo.

I'm not bitching, I'm just describing. I suppose not every job we have at different points in our lives can be fulfilling and/or fun. I have a sense this one will be nice to have for a limited period of time (like say, when I get my bills paid off and/or am able to keep A in the style to which she has become accustomed, or so she says - actually, just today she sent me an email that said "I hate that you have to work. I want you to quit so you can come back and drink with me. Goodbye.").

So I hope at least that I will be able to cull a few funny stories from this job to share with you, but I worry. Frankly, telling you about how I accidentally left the ice machine in the break room frig on over the weekend and it filled up the whole freezer with ice and how I was also the one who discovered it on Monday morning, that is not the stuff of Comedy Central, I must say. What if I added that on my first week of work, the other senior somethingorother was telling me about how she left the ice machine on and it spilled out over the weekend and to be careful not to do the same thing? *crickets* Man, this is a tough crowd. Anyone here from St. Louis?

Metro-Bitch-O'-The-Week: Someone threw up right in front of the way in/out of the Greenbelt Metro tonight at rush hour. Don't lie to me, you wish you could lead The Glamorous Life, you know, the one where you have big thoughts, big dreams, and a big brown Mercedes sedan (tm Sheila E, who, btw, I totally loved, and also Apollonia plus Wendy and Lisa, oh who am I kidding, I was a big Prince/TAFKAP fan back in the day and when I say back in the day, I mean Dirty Mind, Controversy and 1999 days, none of that bullshit Lovesexy/Graffiti Bridge business, ok I'm done now).

Punch Line Loser

I'm on a another Spinanes kick at the moment, forgive and indulge me.

Still swimming towards your hands
When all is said and done
Locked in a Heisman stance
And I don't trust a thing
Why don't you prove me wrong

Midwest Represent

How sweet the weekend is, how sweet it is.

So yesterday, I attended a backyard BBQ/gay wedding reception-type thing. It was there that, in combination w/ a couple of other incidents, that I noticed an increasingly common phenomenon. Now that I'm living out here on the east coast, I have been finding these little pockets of Midwestern peeps who are all about high-fiving each other when they discover their Midwestern compatriots. Literally, I have been high-fived (physically and verbally) by like ten people from Indiana or Michigan or Minnesota or thereabouts. Granted, I'm like "woo, Midwest represent!" back to them and all, but it's been quite funny. I work with two people from Indiana (one of which high-fived me over a conference call about the old bars and hangouts that used to be at Purdue) and all these displaced Midwesterners keep coming out of the woodwork, happy to find a fellow farmer in this city. (Ms. Snarker, I am one person away from having a euchre group, I kid you not).

I guess this probably happens in other big not-Midwestern cities. And like in Canada or Sri Lanka. We're like magnets to each other; I can pick out a Chicago or St. Louis accent on a crowded street. I will not make grand generalizations about why we find and seek each other out. And how we immediately have fond feelings for these strangers from Illinois or Wisconsin. I'm sure that native New Yorkers, when they move to Ames, Iowa or something and run across each other, are like, thank fucking god, these people are fucking crazy here, save me. We're all just looking for a little piece of home, aren't we?

Go Buckeyes! Missouri rules! High-five! Midwest represent!
