The sun also sets
I have been wondering if I should shutter ye olde blogg. I don't seem to be generating much content or feel inclined to post. Bottom line is that I've been busy with lots of other things and less likely to be on the internets for fun with any regularity and what with the twitter and such, I think shorter is sweeter. I'll leave it up for posterity and if the mood strikes, will post here/there/never. I kind of hate when things fade out but you know...

3 years: An inventory
Three years is a long time and also not really. I always knew the move would be temporary, even before I arrived. Moving to DC was to support another person's dream. And also, I had fewer choices, career-wise, at the time. Sometimes, we do what we must for reasons that may or may not hold up down the line. That's life, nice and messy and complicated.
So I get to DC. I find a job. I break up and remain friends. I commute hours daily. I move and commute a little less. I find a way to cope (poorly? adequately?) with 4M people. I get really good at the work I am doing. I actually unpack my boxes on Inauguration day. I bide my time. I am rewarded. I prepare to leave DC.
That's the short story. The long story is in the 300 or so posts here since 2007 and all those 1000 tweets. The longer story is mostly unwritten. We all have have our own life stored away elsewhere, right? Par is in a 8X8X16 Pod container waiting to be driven across the country.
Like a good Libra, I've been trying for balance. Good/bad. Pros/Cons. Positive/Negative. Many many times while I've been here, I've failed in seeing the good. I've failed in living in the moment and appreciating the positives. I've failed at a couple of really important things. I've also done some pretty cool things and met some great people. Now is a good time to reframe, rebalance, reflect.
Things I've gained:
A sharp business savvy and better understanding of How Things Work
Detailed map of DC establishments serving over 500 beers on tap/bottles
A reputation for knowing my shit and getting things done
Profound hatred of strangers standing too close/touching me/gathering near me
An understanding of budgets and profit and how not to get screwed
A group of good friends who have made me laugh, shared my misery, and supported me
A drinking problem + a new relationship with scotch
Extensive network of business contacts that will pay off down the line
Sometimes viewing the world and people in it as 'contacts that will pay off down the line"
The 20 pounds back that I had lost in 2006
An extensive AFV (acronym-filled vocabulary) tailored for the business and social services world
More grey hair and the experience of turning 40 in this city
How to use politics and connections to get what you want/have people do what you want
Extensive travel and a shitload of airline miles and hotel points
The desire never to travel on anything called a "Beltway" again
An awesome massage therapist
An aversion to using politics to get what you want
Tones of new music
Greater appreciation for people who say what they mean/mean what they say
The ability to predict the amount of time it takes to travel a certain distance with and without traffic
Perfected recipes of beef vegetable stew, chicken pot pie, and orzo salad
The path I needed to take to get to where I'm going now...

See? It's all good. An arrow finds its way, you gotta go there to come back and all that jazz. Next blog post coming to you from the middle of the country. Here we go...

Yes I can!
Here is also something that I have noticed in the last year or so: I never answer my phone anymore. Like I actively do not answer, no matter who is calling. It's really weird for me and I am not quite sure what is up with that. I have to be in a very specific mood to answer the phone and apparently, I am rarely in said mood. I kind of want to change my voicemail message to suggest that if someone wants to tell me something, to email or text b/c I rarely listen to my voicemail too. No secret, but I am not the Great Communicator these days. Does not mean I love you less.
Which is all to say that because I am not blogging or yakking on the phone today, I will be doing something I have been avoiding since I moved to this area almost 2 years ago. 2 years of not unpacking a bunch of boxes or hanging pictures or attempting to make this place feel like more than a storage unit.
So today I am going to reclaim my living room and attempt to figure out what I have in those boxes, sort, and find a relatively unobtrusive place to store stuff. Granted, I do not have the room to put all this stuff away, but I can at least consolidate and move to my office or closets. I am also going to hang some pictures/art on the walls. This is my goal and activity for today. It is all a part of my attempt to reframe my life on the positive side while I'm here.
Operation Resolution Fulfillment: Bitch less, do more.
ETA: Well, after ~17 hours and a new president later, I have finally achieved my goal of reclaiming my living room/life. Literally, I have been living among boxes for far too long and inspired by Obama's call, I have taken responsibility. Everything has a place and if it didn't work, much like many obsolete bullshit Bush programs, it was cut. Unfortunately, I didn't have my stud finder here (and since Viv was not available as its replacement given her skill at finding studs), I was unable to hang pictures on the wall. They are ready to go however. All in all, a great 4 days off. Extra bonus points: Obama!

PSA
I will be making one of those appointments soon. I found out today that my first girlfriend, who I've mentioned here and here, has breast cancer at the age of 42. I'm really upset quite honestly and am hoping for the best for her. She had a partial mastectomy and will begin chemo in a month. Man. I don't know what else to say.
So maybe if you think about it, you'll do a self-exam this month and make that appointment if you need it. For me? Please?

no more birkenstocks
So this weekend I am going to attempt to get my life back in order (i.e., laundry/bills) and remember what it's like to relax, whatever that means (i.e., booze, vice). Unfortunately, part of the weekend is going to be spent doing a bit of work and also helping The Agent pack. You know how much I love packing, but thankfully for my sanity, I am not the one moving. She bought a house a bit north of here which is good; we can share custody of the dogs with minimal hassle. Heh. It's all good and the fact that she's taking a bunch of stuff makes what remains more manageable for me. Remember when I was bitching about the STUFF and THINGS and how oppressive that can be? I will have less to bitch about when I eventually move, right? Right. You know, though, it will be a bit of an adjustment, the whole official dissolution of a relationship. Dividing up stuff. It's been friendly and amicable and was primarily my idea, but this part of it, the impending finality of not living together, is kinda hitting me. It's not bad or good, it's just an adjustment. It's life. It's how this whole thing works sometimes.
So tonight I will be going with a friend of mine to a halloween party. What's scarier than a halloween party? A lesbian halloween party! The saving grace (maybe?) is that there was no mention of "potluck" and/or "bobbing for birkenstocks". You know how much I love halloween so I need not tell you how that I'm already planning on where I will be when that trick or treating thing happens. Answer: Not here.
That's it from The Crab. The more things change, the more they stay the same and that is all I have to say about that. Goodbye!

Kitchen sink
So clearly, I needed this week to fully enjoy last weekend, which meant catching up on sleep lost due to late nights and such as well as adjusting to work/life again. While I wasn't much looking forward to coming back here, it was easier after a big big dose of home (I'll tell you more about it in another post). Even after this week of hellish I-95 delays every single day, my head is still out in that big field so it's ok. I now know the secret of making it through here for a while - getting out when I can. Duly noted!
I will actually be traveling again in a couple of weeks to Chicago for work. I'll be there the whole week and while it's for business, I love that city so it's all good. I've spent many a good time there; a bunch of my friends from undergrad (fellow euchre players unite!) lived there so there were frequent roadtrips plus it was close to IN obviously so it's the Midwest, you know? I intend to go to my favorite Italian restaurant in the entire world, Tuscany on Taylor St. Definitely check it out if you're ever there. So yeah, I'm looking forward to the trip even though there will be an abundance of acronym-speak.
Let's see, what else? Thursday I wanted to go to the Black Cat and see Midlake, but I didn't want to have to drive in and go by myself. Yeah, lame excuse, but I don't know this city well enough yet to know the safe spots and plus also? Going to shows by myself, while I've done it, is no fun and in a city I'm still a little leery of makes it less appealing. Yeah, I'm lame, especially when so many good bands come through here. No excuse on my part. Go with me next time and we won't have this issue, now will we?
So the big things happening this weekend? Eyebrow wax today at noon and (hopefully) finding the Chiefs game on the tee-vee. Woo! Now that is what I call a weekend. Actually, it's good by me, I don't care to do too much so a lazy weekend works. There was some talk of going into the city later today but we shall see. I think we may catch up with our Small World Friends we met a couple of weeks ago. If beer is involved, that would be fine too. Trust me, the amount of good beer I consumed last weekend is just now wearing off, time to restock!
Finally, in completely unrelated news, we're not better, they're just differently abled. Interesting read nonetheless.
That's all for now. Goodday!

The Summer of Our Discontent
Some quick housekeeping: My 20th high school reunion was, in two words, scary and fascinating. Only one perm spotted and a mullet thrown in for good measure. Speaking of the Metro (which I wasn't but will now for my one allotted Metro-bitch a week), I have found that the ragtime sounds of Squirrel Nut Zipper melt away the misery of the afternoon commute. Try it next time you are crammed into a red line car between Metro Center and Gallery Place with 300 of your closest friends in the summertime heat. Additionally, I thought I saw Chamique Holdsclaw riding the green line. For many reasons, I quickly decided that this was highly unlikely. Speaking of the WNBA, I will be attending the All-Star game in a couple of weeks because you know, Sue and LJ requested I be there (they always play better when I'm in the stands, what can I say). Finally, I cannot wait for the fucking weekend.
Now, a couple of you know this next bit, but really, what's the point in having a blog if you can't tell the whole world (ok, those 3 people from Iran, Nebraska, and Sri Lanka who regularly read this thing)? So as you may know, I moved out here with The Agent because she took a transfer. Remember how much I bitched? Yeah. Well, you know, sometimes when you have a big life change, things change big. For a variety of reasons that were present before and after this whole move, The Agent and I have separated. But of course, like good lesbians, we're still friends. So now we start the process of dividing all that shit that we moved out here. Good times! It's going to take a bit, I'll be looking for a place closer to this new job, etc etc. See, if you're going to break up with someone, wait until you've moved across country with them because it's so much more fun/easy. And then you can hear your friends/acquaintances/strangers say variations on a theme of why did you move in the first place/why didn't you break up before now/I knew this would happen/what are you going to do now. That's almost as fun. It could be worse though, I know. We're lucky in that this has been amicable.
So what am I going to do now? Well, I'm going to stay for a while and work and try to enjoy living here for a bit. Despite my reservations about this whole place, it's good to challenge oneself a bit and see how it goes. I know I won't be staying here forever, too many people and too much concrete, but while I'm here and have a good (if not my dream) job, I'm going to suck it up and be a good soldier. There are lots of great things here to do/see and when Hillary is president, she'll probably want to call on my services. I'm kind of her go-to gal, so you know, that's how we roll. Holla.

3some
1. I have been using a used Mac (given to me as a gift from J) the last week or so after 20ish years of PC business. My assessment: Not many differences other than I can't seem to find shit because the Finder thing is kind of gay and hello, why won't thumbnails show up of jpgs so I don't have to look at every damn one. Other than that, it's got lots of bells/whistles that are nice. I am not sold yet, but I can't complain.
2. I attended my first Wash Mystics game last night. And by attended, I mean I drank beer all night because I ran into someone I knew from back home (crazy huh?) and the game was going on in the background. Normally, I like to watch the game (and from what I understand, I did not miss much), but since I had free tix and was busy making potential beer buddies in this damn place, I could not be bothered. Good times..
3. I will be going away this weekend for a much needed getaway from this place. Much needed. Hope your weekend is just as good as mine (though I don't like to be a player hater, but I doubt it will be, unless you plan on winning the lottery, in which case, please buy A and Miss V a pony). And with that, I bid you good day!

Top Ten Things That Currently Occupy a Positive Place in My Thoughts
10. Macadamia nuts
They are tasty and rich and the texture is divine. I'm a fan of nuts and I like turning other people on to them. So I say: Go bust a nut with Macadamias!
9. Wine in a box!
Advantages: Cost efficient/cheap, seemingly endless, doesn't spoil (at least I think), easy-pour spout made just for one's mouth if things come down to that. Disadvantages: None. Winner: Wine in a box!
8. Little People, Big World
For some reason, TLC is playing a constant stream of this charming documentary/series and can I admit something to you? I really, really totally would love to live on their pumpkin farm. That is all.
7. Bandanas
Back in the day and, you know, if I were a gay man, I'd probably wear, like, a grey bandana in my left pocket or something. Now I wear bandanas on my head because my hair is longer and gets in the way of important things. Like seeing. Or eating. So yeah, bandanas come in handy. Do you like my red one?
6. The View
So, one of the rooms in this house is small and faces the back. I set up my office there and have a desk right in front of the window. The view from that window is really nice, big tall trees and eventually, I won't be able to see the houses behind that area. It's jungle-like and the other day, I counted no less than 15 large hawk-type birds roosting way up, hanging out. The view makes me forget where I am.
5. Text messages
How did we ever survive without them? How did I ever survie without them? All I can say is thank fucking god for texts.
4. GPS units
We have one on loan from the Gov and let me tell you, I would have never made it into/out of Adams Morgan without it. However, we (and by we, I mean me) find the voice to be too naggy and bossy. I will turn left if I damn well want. I also appreciate that every Starbucks in a 100 mile radius is mapped for my mocha pleasure (I've been trying to cut down, but I am only human). I am not entirely sure that the Gov isn't tracking our every movement, but fine, yes, that was me on my way to buy crack and ho's. Sue me, Uncle Sam. Point being: GPS units are scary/great.
3. Accents
I have always been a fan of accents when someone speaks. I am a bigger fan now. There are lots of them out this way, different, new, all kinds. It makes talking to people that much better. Accents are tout a fait delicieux!
2. Baltimore Basilica
I'm not religious, but can I tell you something? This is actually quite beautiful. I imagine it was busy on Easter Sunday, the first since it was restored. I wonder if those people enjoyed how lovely it must have been.
1. Words
Again, always been a big fan, but you know, words = good. Occasionally, I am at a loss for them. Yes, it's true. I am going to try to find the right ones, the positive ones, for awhile. I've been too negative and closed for a while, so it's time to change the frame. So here are some words I like right now either because of how they sound or what they mean: ersatz, croissant, please, crocus, lascivious, pasta, thistle, hydrate, yes, spring.

What up, you loose floozy!
Here is a brief roundup of my activities: two parties (one lame, one not), snow, open house (again), fire, chili, football, mochas, beer, text messages, phone calls (not answered), emails, plans, etc etc etc. Suffice to say, it sounds as uneventful as it was.
So we've got our plans in place to get out to DC next weekend for a week on a house-hunting trip. It will be mostly about finding a place, getting to know the lay of the land, and checking out the area. We're both having a hard time with getting a good grasp on the distances out there. Maps are not helpful either. I know things on the East Coast are all condensed so what would be a couple of hours distance out here is like 15 minutes out there. I've been to DC a fair amount in the past and once or twice took the train between Baltimore/DC. Still, I have no idea what the distances feel like. So most of our trip will be figuring that shit out and getting a feel for the land and people. It will be like our own private expedition to the new land and its mysterious inhabitants!
That's it for now..
ETA: This email just in from my straight girlfriend, A, regarding a nosy secretary at her work.
I just can't believe she had the nerve to ask if I messed with anyone and THEN if I'm loose. HA! Who says "loose" anymore, anyway? I think we should totally bring that word back...

Gotta fix my weave and holla!
It was 60 degrees here yesterday. Today it is 11 and sleeting/snowing/icing. Fire tonight!
The Agent has misplaced the combination to our safe sometime around our last move. As you know, she is a stickler for safety and such. If I weren't living here, she'd have a gun secreted away in every room for easy access to guard against intruders. Anyway, we keep our impt paps in the safe and I also put a few things I didn't want destroyed in a fire (remember when I briefly considered simply burning down the house when I realized how much stuff we had to move?). She has no idea where she put the combination and (unusual for me) I apparently never bothered to write it down somewhere. She did not take the lock picking and safe busting course so we are up shit creek for awhile until it turns up. Hopefully, I won't need my birth certificate anytime soon.
ETA (1/16): Combination located! You can now rest easy knowing our important papers and my mom's handcrafted Christmas ornament are safe and accessible. Carry on!
I had a much needed chiropractic adjustment this afternoon..a two week long headache convinced me that it was my neck out of whack so there was adjusting and cracking. It was heaven.
While I was out/about, I of course stopped and got a double mocha and also decided to rent yet another Battlestar Galactica disc. As you know, we have been slowly plodding our way through the past two seasons and right now, we are on Season 2.5, Disc 2. As god is my witness, we will make it through Season 2 before we move, and hopefully, before 3.5 starts! This is why I am reluctant to get involved in too many shows, the commitment is too great. All I have to say is that if the rumors going on about my beloved Starbuck are true, I shall be mightily disappointed. If I watched 3 seasons and lost my object d'lust, I will kick some frakking ass. I do not kid about that. Aside: The blooper video on that link is HI-fucking-larious! I laughed and laughed..
Apropos of nothing, but Jesus H. Christ, how can people actually pay attention to anything Giada De Laurentiis cooks with that kind of cleavage going on? You know I love my Food Network peeps, but Giada is killing me with the decolletage. We've already established my appreciation for all things mammary, but lord, how can I learn Everyday Italian if I can't focus on the food?
Finally, The Agent has an appointment with my beloved Roxanne tomorrow morn. I'm going along for the ride to not only make my own appointment to see her (my hair has grown to ponytail length and is a little too wild for public consumption), but also to meet A for coffee while we wait for gf to get her hair did.
On that note, I will leave with words of wisdom from the great Missy "Misdemeanor" Elliott:
What's up motherfuckers?
I need to know is V-A up in this bitch?
New York, St. Louis, Chicago, Philly, LA, Atlanta
I'm diggin' that
But how about the ladies that got a head full of fake weave or braids
Holla at ya peoples
Oh! C'mon
Ooh baby let me fix my weave
Touch me up and let me fix my weave
You could pick me up about a quarter to 3
Before I walk in the club I gotta fix my weave
(Oh) Baby fix my weave
Baby baby let me fix my weave
On the highway I do above 90
(woo-woo) pull me over get the fake ID
I met a guy named Tommy
Very charming
He was on me like cheese be on macaroni
His game real tight making me so horny
Fine enough for us to fuck and be his baby mommy
You really don't know me
So I moves it slowly
Brush up and let him hold me
Let me spit some baloney
Baby you could call me
If you go down on me
But you got to back up off me
Wearing cubic zirconia
I told him, "Baby let me fix my weave
I got a hair out of place and use a fake ID."
Pepe LePew voulez vous ooh oui
You want to misdemeanor me
You gotta spend more G's (ohhwee)
Ooh baby let me fix my weave
Touch me up and let me fix my weave
You could pick me up about a quarter to 3
Before I walk in the club I gotta fix my weave
(Oohwee) Baby fix my weave
Baby baby let me fix my weave
On the highway I do above 90
(woo-woo) pull me over get the fake ID
I used to date a guy named Chris
Sloppy with his kiss
But he was good with his tongue
I called him Mr. Young One
Mr. Young One had a big ding-dong
Balls the size of ping-pong
I had him souped like won-ton
I put the beat on
And on my ass he skeet on
I put the heat on young gun
Fresh meat he season
Yes, yes we used to creep down the beach
He was insane like Rick James
And with a mask he's Superfreak
I told him, "Gimme cash to fix my weave
And I don't want no excuses 'bout your baby mommy
'cause your child support money don't fix my weave
and you know nigga please me no fuck for free."
To the heavy weave cities
Miami, Jersey, D.C., the Carolinas, Detroit, Louisville, Ohio, to all the
projects
To the beauty salons, and curling irons stitching in that hair
Okay, oohwee yeah fix your weave
Straight up like a perm you heard

Change change change
It was all good though. We had a great time and The Agent even came out, which she never does on NYE. She went back home though at 10:30 after her limit of socializing was met. There was good food, good music, a fire, and unlike the last couple of NYs, I was spending it with people I liked and wanted to hang with so I consider it a good one. And the morning bfast and burning of regrets was great too. I'm not sure where I'll be next year at this time, but I'm going to count this NYE as one of the better ones I've had.
I have also made a NY resolution I think I can handle: Embrace change and be happy.
Hope yours rocked too.

In the heartland/out of the closet
ETA: One would think that the only gay people in Kansas are old Johnson county couples who host potlucks! Where are the hot young things I see up on campus and the queens who own that bed and breakfast just outside of Salina? The sample size was pretty small and not very representative.
In other news, I have self-diagnosed my nose as having a staph infection and have decided that after 3 days of intense pain/swelling, that perhaps I should see a doctor. As you know, I myself am a doctor and have absolutely no qualms about diagnosing myself and others in all matters of psychological, physical, and hair style problems. Given my background in the liberal arts and sciences, I am trained in all manner of illness, particularly those stemming from Jonathan Frazen dysphoria. I once diganosed a friend with acute depression as simply being protein-deficient and overly carbed. A piece of my homemade meatloaf perked her right up. I also removed several pieces of gravel from this same friend's knee following a bike wreck, using the Stoli I was drinking as an antiseptic. I am actually not kidding. I have painlessly and efficiently removed skin tags (tip: sanitize a nail clipper in alcohol first!). I routinely work with my hair consultant Roxanne on afterhour hair emergencies. We once spotted a bi-level at 10pm, but alas, it was too late to save it, neither one of us had scissors at the bar. Finally, I find that nothing cures what ails you like good sex and thus, in my professional opinion, suggest that treatment for most individuals. Point being, though, I am not a miracle worker, I have no actual (sanctioned) medical training and I cannot prescribe antibiotics; thus I must bite the bullet and go the doctor today and figure out what the fuck is going on with my nose and drug up before New Years Eve. It's the only way...
ETA: Folliculitis! With staph! Just as I suspected! Antibiotics, good times! So while I was there at the doctor's office, the nurse was asking me some Qs about my nose and she goes: "So I have to ask, any drug use, you now, like cocaine?" And part of me was screaming to say: "Only off a stripper's ass, is that a bad thing to do?" Then I said something about how strict The Agent is about all those illegal things and then the nurse goes into this story about how she used to do hair removal in a gyno office (yeah, that kind) and she once had a lesion up in her nose and the staff was freaked out about whether herpes could be an airborne transmitted disease and the doctor asked if she might have herpes and she was all like hell no, and I want a STD test! I don't know, it was just a strange story to follow up on and she never did tell me what caused her lesion but in my professional opinion, she probably picked her nose just a little too vigorously. I find that in a lot of the people who seek my guidance. Keep your fingers out of your nose, people, or you'll end up with folliculitis and a staph infection and I will not feel the least bit sorry for you. That is all.

Once more, with feeling
We are supposed to go over to some friends later tonight for after dinner drinks and maybe some games. I am kind of looking forward to that, but that is only because it's distracting enough. I think I'm going to say fuck it and make up a big batch of mimosas to get through until then. Yes yes, we all have to fall off the wagon at some point, why not on Christmas? Cheers, Baby Jesus! Happy Birthday!
To those who actually dig the day and are like having a good time, I say good for you and have a happy holiday.

Let the train whistle blow
I talked to my Dad yesterday and found out that he had been robbed. Someone actually broke into their house in the middle of the day and took a bunch of old money he had been collecting. He's still trying to figure out what all is missing, but mostly silver certificate dollars and old silver coins etc. Even though it sucked, he didn't seem to be too upset about it. I know I would have been on an ass-kicking mission to find the punks. I had The Agent call him and chat, not that she can do anything other than he likes her and they tease each other. She offered to interrogate any persons of interest for him. He once called and told her he had found an old bone on his lake property and wondered whether she'd want to come investigate it and see if it was Jimmy Hoffa. My dad looks a lot like Johnny Cash, even more so as he's gotten older but also when he was younger. He's a retired railroad man and right now, a pretty damn good Texas Hold 'em player. He taught me how to fish, how to golf, how to drive. He indulged my tomboy ways when I was a kid and coached my softball team, bought me a bb gun, and took me to Dairy Queen for lunch. When my parents got divorced when I was 10, he stayed close and eventually, remarried. I got a boatload of new step-brothers and sisters. My first car was one of his, a 76 Buick Regal that I still miss. He came to football games when I was in college and he has helped me move more times than I care to count. He was the first person I called the night my mom died. I knew I would need his help figuring out what to do next. Our conversations now consist of the following things: the weather, sports, how my car is running, birds, what's happening at the Navy Club, what project am I working on in the shop, and what The Agent is up to these days. You know, surface stuff. Since my mom died, we have had a couple of very personal, intense conversations -- which are often a curse and a blessing. I have found that as I get older, the truth doesn't necessarily get any easier to hear and it's impossible to resist. I'm one of those people who would rather know than not, even if knowing is the more painful choice. So my dad and I now walk that line between doing the Midwestern thing of talking about everything but what really needs to be said and truth-telling. I'm more like him than I realize at times and I'm perfectly content to talk about Bobby Knight and the cold front that's coming through today, better get the car in to be winterized and what time is it now in Indiana - an hour ahead or an hour behind?

Like grass growing
I am cautiously optimistic, but then again, I was the same way in 1994. And 1996. And 2000. We shall see, I hate to get all upbeat and then be beaten down by the public's tolerance for bullshit and hypocrisy.
So I voted in our new place today since we moved recently and are now out in what they call a township and that means we voted in the break room of a volunteer fire department located on N 1100 Rd. And by break room, I am being generous. It was..quaint. And the 3 little old ladies were right in the middle of lunch and were happy to have company. I was the 278th person to vote and they said they were doing brisk business.
Prior to voting, however, I was being given a tour of my friend's family goat farm. Yes, civic duty and goat shit go well together. My friend J and I went camping on her family's property last night (it was an awesome night to go, warmish temps and fullish moon and then fog rolling in) and on the way home, we stopped at the barn to admire her dad's new money making crop. I found out that a Wither goat is a little male goat who has had his set of "hanging chads" banded and that said chads eventually "wither" away and fall off. I didn't ask there were any withered bits amid the goat shit, I didn't want to know. Did you know that the way to tell which goats have been impregnated by the Billy is by having the Billy wear a harness on his chest that contains colored powder? Then all you need to do is look at the Nannies and see which ones got lucky by whether they're marked on their back end. It's like a Rural Rainbow Party! Good times, good times...
That's all I got except they just predicted the Dems to win the House. Maybe all those damn Withers in Congress will grow a set back and do some actual checking and balancing. Too bad it's too little too late.

Plaza Days and Nascar Nights
After a few hours of wandering around, we went and had coffee (during which we had a quasi-near purse snatching -- which I thwarted. So much for my little law enforcement cheetah and her reflexes!). Then we went to one of our favorite places for beef and had a very lovely dinner. We were home early enough to have some QT. Yay for Saturday night dates!
This morning we got up and around and went for a 10 mile bike ride. The weather is warm and sunny so it was great to get out. And my Chiefs are kicking ass as we speak so all it well. My Boyfriend Tony Gonzales is The Man.
After the game, I'm headed back out to my shop and work on my newest project, which is a shop stool I designed. It has wheels and a lawn mower seat and, if I can fabricate it, a 2-stroke motor and a mini frig. A girl can dream. Don't think I won't have a YouTube video up of me racing it down the driveway whe I finish it. And that is how we roll out here, aight?
Peace out!

Weekend wrapup
So, Friday I think I may have been on the good side of the proverbial Old Girls Club. A contact finally came through and things are looking positive. In my area, it's all about who you know..actually, I'm sure that's true for many many things. But it's one of those cases where you don't want to talk about good things until you sign on the dotted line because of The Jinx. We shall see..
What else? Some old friends from grad school were in town and we had them out to the house Sat night for dinner. Here's the thing: I love kids, I really do. And most kids love me. Kids, pets and old folks are fans of mine. Many of my friends have kids and I adore all of them. Except this one. I don't know what it was about this 6 year old boy, but he's just not a nice friendly kid. Sure there are discipline issues with the parents, but it's something more than just a boy acting out. The Agent had to retire from the situation early and I can't tell you how much I wanted to join her. It was exhausting having to monitor this kid and I developed a very large headache that remains to this moment. Even the Baby Dog, who loves people, went to bed with The Agent just to get away. It's strange and sad to me. I want to like my friends' kids instead of being glad that they live four hours away.
The cool thing (at least to me) about Sat night aside from seeing old friends was that we had our first fire in the fireplace. It was a cold and miserably rainy day on Sat and that night it was freezing. Perfect for a fire. It was glorious. Yay fire! Loved it so much that I made another one tonight b/c it's still nice and nippy. It's the little things, you know?
I miss drugs.
So I've been in a total music mood lately, mainly b/c I've been riding my bike constantly and have the ipod going. You know how you go through periods where it's all music all the time and other times when you don't listen to a thing for months? And remember when I said I really believe that no one gives two shits about what someone else has on their ipod? I still think that so here are the songs I recently downloaded:
- Hold On, Hold -- Neko Case -- Fox Confessor Brings The Flood
- The Golden Age (Beck cover) -- The Flaming Lips --Yoshimi Wins! (Live Radio Sessions)
- Invisible Ink (Live) --Aimee Mann --Lost In Space (Special Edition)
- At Least That's What You Said --Wilco -- Kicking Television - Live In Chicago
- All These Things That I've Done --The Killers -- Hot Fuss
- When You Were Young --The Killers -- Sam's Town
- The One I Love -- David Gray --Life In Slow Motion
- For Us -- Pete Yorn -- For Us
- One (U2 cover) -- Cowboy Junkies --Early 21st Century Blues
- My Skin --Natalie Merchant --Ophelia
- Hands Clean (iTunes Version) --Alanis Morissette --iTunes Originals
- Head Over Feet (iTunes Version) Alanis Morissette --iTunes Originals
If there's an awesome cover or a live version of a song I like, I am all over it. I lived for B-sides back in the day. So I'm always on the lookout. I'm a ninja b-side cover queen.
Alright, that be it. The fun never ends.
Confidential to attache: You rock with that bsg tip! Thanks so much!
