I think we're superstars

Howdy. So yes, I am trying not to get overwhelmed by the amt of work I need to do between now and then and also hello I have to go back to San Antonio on Sunday for seriously the third time in 3 months which really how many times does one need to see the Alamo is my question. Here's what else:

I purchased a desk, bookcase, file cabinet, and wheelie deal desk thing for my iMac Betty who I can now cart around the house wherever I should like her to be. It's not as creepy as it sounds or like that Xfiles episode where they kept mom on a cart up under the bed for breeding which honestly is one of the most twisted things I've seen on TV. But enough about Betty - my office furniture is going to rock as soon as I actually assemble. And even more honestly, I probably won't assemble it, The Farmer is gung-ho about doing so bc she likes to feel handy and butch so I will let her.

I have a splinter. Left ringer finger if you must know.

The weekend after next I have farm watch duties out at the girls. The last time we had a nice roaring fire and I let their 30 chickens out to roam all day while the Algerian got all drunk and visited the goats. It was eventful! I promised him I would go join him camping during that weekend out by the lake. We have done a million and one winter camping situations so I'm prepped but aye, ever since that whole DC deal, I have become soft and not as campy. That will change come hell/high water.

My friend DK got tix to the chiefs-raiders game on Jan 2 for us. I pray that it will not be -10. Either way, hello Arrowhead = my one/only love (in addition to wine, women, song).

In case you haven't noticed, I am avoiding the work that I should be doing tonight. Question: Will I actually do what needs to be done or will I simply try to do it all tomorrow morning which honestly is most likely? Answer: Somewhere between the truth and a lie.

What else? Probably that I have been all up into The xx of late. I don't care if I'm a little late to the party, I like them. Had one song on a mix someone made for me and just rediscovered them. British! Youth! Emo!

Finally, I am pretending not to notice that it's coming on Christmas, they're cutting down trees, putting up reindeer and singing songs of joy and peace. I wish I had a river I could skate away on.

You are not mine

It bears repeating.

The heart is a stone and this is a stone that we throw
Put your hand on this stone, it's the stone of a home you know
They say we will go far, but they don't know how far we'll go
With our legs on the edge and our feet on the horizon

They say we can throw far but they don't know how far we throw
With our legs on the edge, and our feet on the horizon
The heart is a stone, and this is a stone that we throw
They say we will go far, but they don't know how far we'll go

It can't be gone, we're still right here
It took so long, can't say we heard it all
Limbs parallel, we stood so long we fell
Tear a moment from the days that carry us on forever

This push and pull is the force of a wave of time
In the heat of the night, we would cry, you are not mine
They said we would go far, but they don't know how far we'd go
'cause this heart is a stone, and this is a stone that we throw

It can't be gone, we're still right here
It took so long, can't say we saw it all
Limbs parallel, we stood so long we fell
Tear a moment from the days that carry us on forever

It can't be gone, we're still right here
It took so long, can't say we felt it all
Limbs parallel, we stood so long we fell
Love's like a pantheon, it carries on forever

The morning birds are singing

Oh, it's one of those nights. So be it. Are you still the boy who rocks my world?

Like the stars above.

You're doing it perfectly

Aye. It's been a week. Do you follow my twitter? I hate how that sounds. Nevermind.

Anyway, yes. It's been a bit of this and that. What do you want from me? What do you want from me?

If loving that is wrong, I don't want to be right. Sorry.

Second thing. This.

I will end on this. Is it the end of the world? Maybe. Why not pretend. It's late. I'm tired.

Part II.

Who doesn't love angsty music on an August night?

They've never shined so bright

Hello to you. Have you recovered from the blizzard that affected 2/3rds of the country but completely missed us with just a few rain showers? I want to be in the path of a blizzard again. Just FYI.

Let's see, what else? I think last time I posted I was in the grip of a bout of insouciance re: my fellow man, myself, and everyone I know. I am slowly pulling myself out of that by focusing on a tiny little light at the end of an east coast tunnel. Also scotch. We all have our coping mechanisms. I am hoping real soon to make something good happen.

(Hint: I *may* be called upon to service the ladies of Lilith Fair. Again. Yes, it's true - I was once the concubine on tour, being passed back and forth like a joint between Amy Ray and Natalie Merchant. Oh the sights I saw! So you can imagine my surprise to hear from the Canadian via parcel post. No, not that Canadian, the other one. You may have assumed Ms. McLachlan was busy raising babies and doing whatever else it is she does when not singing, but no. She has been ever steadfast in wooing me back on tour all this time. There is a reason it took 10 years for LF to happen again. I have a long memory and my experiences with Rickie Lee Jones haunt me to this day. After my class action suit on behalf of myself and several woodlawn animals was settled a few months ago, I felt ready to hit the road again. No artist would agree until I was placed firmly in the tour rider and so it came to pass. A new generation of young lesbians can now experience the wonders of unfettered estrogen that LF brings due to my generosity and/or many skills. No need to thank me, I know.)

I apologize for going on, it has been a long day of planning to quit my job and daydreaming about my life elsewhere. I also played a shitload of Texas Hold Em on my iPhone, if you must know. I am now in what could be called Senioritis wherein I have ceased to care about this thing they call "work" and this "job". I am counting the days! You shall be the first to know if it comes to pass or if I must place myself in front of the Metro!

Until then, here is a song that you will like:

Are you waiting for a miracle?

I used to dream about saving the world
Now I just dream about the holidays
I used to write so many songs for my girl
Now I just dream about floating away

What kind of weapons have they got?

From this moment on
Blaring like a trumpet
Coming from above us and somewhere below
The confidence of knowing
Descending to relieve us of the struggle
To believe it’s so

Do you wish it was me?

I'm kind of obsessed with this song right now. Ignore Dave.

Plus also I like his hair, it's messy in the right way.

Come pick me up
Take me out
Fuck me up
Steal my records
Screw all my friends
behind my back
With a smile on your face
And then do it again
I wish you would...

Traveling again

In an attempt to change my brain chemistry from negative to positive, I am going to join millions of others today and go look for an Xmas tree with/for The Agent and do a little Xmas shopping. Retail therapy: Just as expensive as real therapy but with less talk/more walk.

I am heading out tomorrow for my final work trip of the year to the great state of Missouri. I enjoyed my last visit there I must say and as you know, I hold no grudges against this red state. For those of you counting at home, I have traveled for work 15 different times this year at an average of 3 days per trip which means that I have spent at least 1.5 months or 45 days away from DC this year. See how I reframed this from something negative (all that travel) into something positive (time spent out of the city)? Baby steps, baby steps.

What's funny about traveling and/or my life is that for the past 15 years or so, I always feel like I am living this Dar Williams song over and over again (click here to download):

I think it started with driving, more speed, more deals, more sky, more wheels
More things to leave behind, now it's all in a day for the modern mind
And I am traveling again
Calling this a ghost town, and where is the heartland?
And I'm afraid, oh, was there any good reason, that I had to go
When all I know is I can never come back.

I suppose it's better than living February again and again. So there's that.

See how this reframing thing works? Strength-based positive outlook, here I come!

I'm smiling too

ps. This song kills me. I plan to marry it.

MMJ is coming to town Sept 3 and I will be going by myself if necessary. That is all.

..if you don't

I'm on a My Morning Jacket kick right now while simultaneously attempting to find fresh air and negotiating the impossible once again. Three days of meetings and barely getting by, this is what's been saving me on the damn Metro.

Click below to download some bootleg MMJ from Bonnaroo and let it sink in, trust me, it will save you.

Go honey go

So, more than three years ago, I started this blog with a post about Aimee Mann so I think it's fitting to belatedly celebrate (?) that occasion with another post about her new album, Smilers which just came out and which I am absorbing. Going to have to go out and buy a new ipod connecter so I can listen to this on the go a bit more. I think I like it..

Maybe I should simply start marking time in Aimee Mann units? Oh, those were the Forgotten Arm years, it was all a blur. Ah, Lost in Space were good times, good times. So I'm going to slip into the Smilers era and see what comes of it...

Go, honey go -
Into the ocean
Go, honey go -
Into the great beyond
Til you're good and gone
And you can hide away for
When everything goes wrong
Honey - go

Go, honey go -
If I were you I would
Leave this neighborhood
Away from people who never
Treat you like they should
Honey - go
Go

In the woods or in the ice and snow
Where there is
No one else you know
You've really nowhere
Else to go
So honey go

Go, honey go
Cause it's a dead end street
And it's a street in a town
Where winning isn't sweet
And every win
Is the beginning of defeat
So honey - go
Go
